The story on screen

Ridley Scott’s 2005 film places Balian of Ibelin at the centre of an epic about Jerusalem, loyalty and the responsibilities of leadership. Orlando Bloom plays Balian; the city and its competing ambitions provide the wider stage.

Where cinema meets history

The film uses real names and a real crisis as the foundation for a substantially fictionalised story. Balian’s screen biography should not be treated as a historical record. The negotiations surrounding Jerusalem’s surrender offer a more direct connection with the events of 1187.

Three things to watch for

  • Leadership: how characters respond when personal ambition and duty collide.
  • The city: why Jerusalem matters to people with different beliefs and loyalties.
  • Service: whose safety is placed at the centre of a decision.
