The Teutonic Order: History & the Black Cross

A hospital brotherhood, a black cross and a far-reaching legacy.

Born beside Acre

The Teutonic Order began as a hospital brotherhood at Acre in 1190. In 1198 it also became a religious military community, following precedents established by the Templars and Hospitallers.

The black cross

The order adopted a white mantle with a black cross. That combination became a lasting marker of its identity. Our clean, simplified cross is an editorial illustration of this familiar symbolism.

From the Holy Land to the Baltic

The order’s work and power expanded beyond the eastern Mediterranean. Its Baltic territories, castles and administration became major parts of its medieval history. The grand master’s headquarters moved to Marienburg in 1309.

Organisation as an achievement

Looking beyond a single battle reveals a different kind of accomplishment: maintaining castles, communication and administration across a large territory. These structures also served conquest and territorial rule, which shaped the experiences of the people living there.

The hospital thread

The hospital origin remained part of the order’s identity. Its history records renewed hospital activity in later centuries, including a hospital at Sachsenhausen in the sixteenth century. Discover that connection in Hospitals & Service.
